The Biology of Transformation:
The Physiology of Presence and Spiritual Transcendence

By Tiffany J. Barsotti, M.Th., Ph.D

About The Biology of Transformation

There are many important axes in human anatomy, including the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis, the Liver Triad Axis, and the Gut-Brain Axis. Less well known to Western medical scientists is a parallel system that can develop in the subtle energy body of the human being. This energy body, while not visible with our current technology, is well known in esoteric healing traditions.

In The Biology of Transformation, author Tiffany Jean Barsotti proposes a new axis in human anatomy, the Reticular Activating System-Vagus Nerve-Alta Major Chakra Axis as the nexus of communication from Higher Consciousness to the physical and subtle energy bodies of the human being.

Barsotti draws extensively on the existing neuroscience and human anatomy literature, as well as the teachings of esoteric traditions, including Tibetan. She offers a nonlinear journey that grapples with ancient teachings and how they relate to the body and mind as perceived by modern medicine.

With the goal of creating a foundation and stimulating thought regarding energy physiology, the body-mind connection, and how our intention shapes our health and environment, The Biology of Transformation provides a scientific review of recent advances in neurophysiology that focus on awakening awareness and consciousness.

“At a time when science and medicine are increasingly seeking to understand the role of consciousness and the biofield in establishing health, this book, which blends ancient esoteric teachings of human anatomy with modern scientific discoveries, presents insight into how consciousness interfaces with the psyche and bodies of the human being. The significance of this insight is matched by Dr. Barsotti’s deep inspiration for this work. To paraphrase her words, if ‘knowing thyself is healing thyself’, then bringing to fruition the promise of the RAS-Vagus Nerve-Alta Major Chakra Axis will help enable further evolution of the human being and provide a foundation for true wellbeing.”

“It was a big aha moment for me when I was first introduced to Tiffany’s work and the Alta Major chakra. Previously I had been referring to that exact area at the base of my skull as my “mail slot,” the zone where I sensed I received messages of guidance and insight. Learning how it was historically referred to as the “Mouth of God” made so much sense. The Biology of Transformation shows us that Alta Major chakra plays a central role in our ascent from normal everyday human consciousness to higher spiritually aware consciousness. Fascinating and important research and highly recommended!”

“As a biophysical/medical anthropologist for many years engaging in fieldwork on consciousness around the world—while simultaneously immersed in biophysics and neuroscience research—I find much of great importance in this book. It is wide-ranging, fine-grained, and passionately inspired in its consideration of some of the most important subjects in existence and offers a unique and invaluable resource for all interested in these subjects.”

“Our Western science has benefitted from the energy medicine models of the East in helping us be aware of the chakra system, nadis, acupuncture meridians, among others.  Our Western scientists and clairvoyants may now return the favor by doing as Rev. Barsotti has done in her book, The Biology of Transformation, in exploring the interface between the higher levels of the biofield and physiology.  Our states of consciousness and expressions of intention have a major effect on our physical body, including the so-called “placebo” effect, that scientist Elmer Green more accurately described as a self-regulation effect.  I’ve explored the Alta Major chakra and its multiple connections with the vagus nerve and the brainstem on a clinical level.  The insights that Tiffany brings to that meeting place of spirit and body offer viable and valuable avenues for further important research.”

“This well-written book is a tour de force integrating the nexus of the gross-physical, the subtle, and the consciousness aspects of the human being. Dr. Barsotti is keenly aware of the quiet revolution that is happening in the foundations of modern science and medicine. She guides the reader through tours of the physicalist view, the subtle energetic view, and the consciousness view, and expertly weaves them together with the introduction of a novel axis of gross and subtle consciousness physiology. This book will serve to accelerate our advancement into this time of exciting human evolution.”

“Not since Jan C. Smuts’ Holism and Evolution [published in 1926] has there been such a comprehensive update on the concept of Holism as the guiding principle of life.”

C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD

“In The Biology of Transformation…Dr. Tiffany Barsotti presents a fascinating hypothesis that the vast fascia network of the physical body is the interface with the body’s subtle energy framework, often called the etheric body in eastern esoteric traditions. Recent findings…regarding the possibilities of piezo-electricity generated in fascial collagen networks, would be in deep accord with her concepts. Her work thus provides a solid framework within which to consolidate old and new data with old and new ideas.”

Neil Theise, MD,
Professor, Department of Pathology, NYU Grossman School of Medicine

“Life is a mystery for which seekers have sought to uncover for millennia. The understanding of the healing process and of indigenous medical practices, which have stood the test of time, is based on spiritual principles at the core of this exploration. Scientists have recently begun to investigate these realms as the evidence base has been established for these disciplines, e.g., yoga and meditation, to name a few. Rev. Barsotti has gifted us with an excellent, scientific review of recent advances in neurophysiology that focuses on awareness and consciousness. She then weaves in the thoughts and teachings of past and current spiritual teachers in a manner that dovetails the science with great expertise. As our national focus shifts from disease to health and well- being, this book serves as a roadmap to both future scientific understanding and the personal journey toward self-awareness.”

“A bold and fascinating work, threading together exoteric and esoteric bodies of knowledge into a modern understanding of the human being. Tiffany Barsotti guides us to ‘a more holistic model of wellness,’ which thoughtfully and respectfully includes ‘self-care and Spiritual development.’ ”

“The Biology of Transformation lucidly reviews how the reticular activating system (RAS), the neural network at the base of our brain, functions as a gatekeeper. Here, we learn, is where decisions are constantly made as to which of the myriad sensations from our external and internal environments reach our awareness, our ‘little c’ consciousness. Then follows the excitement, Dr. Barsotti’s ground-breaking challenge to the biomedical view of the body: What if the RAS also functions as a conduit for what she calls ‘big C’ Consciousness, the basis of our spiritual strivings? The careful delineation of this hypothesized body-mind-spiritual intersection is of profound importance for our view of ourselves as living beings as well as for the emerging paradigm of ‘whole person health.’ ”

Co-Director of Research and Innovation, Consciousness and Healing Initiative, Emeritus Research Director, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine

“Rev. Tiffany Barsotti stands among the “great thinkers—scientists of our time” who walks her talk and sings eloquently her song of original conceptualization building on years of intense study, research, experimentation and dialogue with professional colleagues, Indigenous cultural foundations, original thinkers, spiritual intuitives and multi-dimensional communicators. She won’t stop until her inner knowing is satisfied. I can only imagine what is next as her search is endless. Her doctoral work is testimony to that exploration. Get ready everyone, to see with new eyes, language and documentation unlocking the mysteries of who we are, how we tick and how we are all connected. I know there is more to explore and are at just the tip of the iceberg. Tiffany is helping us get there.”

President, Akamai University

“With masterful integrative skills, Dr. Barsotti weaves a compelling narrative which adds to our understanding of how scientific knowledge and spirit are reciprocally interacting in this time of advancement in both technology and spiritual enlightenment. Her thesis of the existence of the triangle arrangement of the reticular activating system, Vegas Nerve, and Alta Major Chakra opens new doors for research and clinical application.”
